Sweetness · dry

Ripe apple and pear, citrus freshness, and in oaked versions, toasty, creamy notes.

Chardonnay is the leading white grape in China, a country where red wine still dominates. It is used both for still wines and for sparkling wine, and its style changes clearly with the region: riper and rounder in Ningxia, fresher and more linear near Beijing.

The first white

Chardonnay is China's most planted white grape. In a country that drinks mostly red, it is leading a quiet revolution.

Still and sparkling

In Ningxia, Silver Heights' Family Reserve Chardonnay surprised critics from its first vintage, and Moët Hennessy makes sparkling wine under the Chandon name. In the Yanqi Basin of Xinjiang, Tiansai has made Chardonnay one of its reference wines.

History in China

Chinese Chardonnay has won growing international recognition: the A8 Chardonnay of Château Changyu Afip near Beijing became a Platinum medal winner at the Decanter World Wine Awards, a sign of the potential for quality whites in a red-wine-loving country. Silver Heights' Chardonnay Reserve, from Ningxia, has been served at a Chinese state banquet.

Growing

In Ningxia, Chardonnay tends to show generous aromatics and riper stone fruit, with its acidity wrapped in a fuller body. In Hebei's cooler, windier Huailai, it shows acidity first: linear, bright, like a backbone carrying the wine. LVMH chose Ningxia for Chandon China's traditional-method sparkling wines, which are based on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
