The giant of the Hexi Corridor
Mogao has grown grapes near Wuwei, in Gansu's Hexi Corridor, since 1983. With about 1,300 hectares of vineyards it is a major producer and the best-known wine name in the province. The company behind it, Gansu Mogao Industrial Development, is listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and, besides wine, has worked in sectors as different as malt and pharmaceuticals.
A Pinot specialist
While most Chinese wineries built their reputation on Cabernet Sauvignon and the Bordeaux varieties, Mogao chose a different path. The relatively cool climate of the corridor suits early-ripening grapes, and Mogao made Pinot Noir its favourite variety, alongside other members of the Pinot family. Its 30 Years Old Vine Pinot Noir 2019 won a Bronze medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2026, a rare example in China of wine from vines of that age.
Working on quality
In recent years Mogao has worked to modernise its vineyards, for example by replacing traditional flood irrigation with drip irrigation to better balance vine growth and fruit. It has also explored international partnerships, including a joint venture with the Greek producer Kir-Yianni to plant Xinomavro, the first Greek grape grown in China.
Why it matters
Mogao is the reference point for Gansu wine and the best place to discover what Pinot Noir can do in China.
