Jiangsu, on China's east coast north of Shanghai, is one of the great baijiu provinces. Its production is concentrated in the city of Suqian, home to two of China's most famous baijiu names, Yanghe and Shuanggou, both now part of the same group. Yanghe created the 'mianrou' (soft, mellow) style that has become one of the best-selling categories of baijiu in China.
Three Gou and one He
Locals sum up the region's baijiu with the phrase 'Three Gou, One He' (三沟一河): the distilleries of Shuanggou, Tanggou and Gaogou, and the town of Yanghe. Yanghe and Shuanggou, the two most prominent, both operate under the Suqian-based Yanghe group, the only company in the industry with two brands recognised as 'China Famous Liquor'.
Mianrou: the soft style
In 2003 Yanghe developed a signature 'mellow' flavour profile and launched its Blue Classic series, Dream Blue, Sky Blue and Ocean Blue, which now accounts for most of its sales. The series created the mianrou (绵柔), 'soft', category of baijiu across China's mid-to-premium market. In Brand Finance's 2025 ranking, Yanghe was the sixth most valuable spirits brand in the world.
Rice wine
Jiangsu also has a rice wine tradition: Huiquan, from Wuxi, is one of the best-known Chinese rice wines outside Shaoxing.
Rice Wine 黄酒
In Wuxi, Jiangsu has its own rice wine tradition, represented by Huiquan, one of the well-known huangjiu names outside Shaoxing.
