Peddlers is widely regarded as the pioneer of craft gin in China. It was created in Shanghai by Joseph Judd, Ryan McLeod and Fergus Woodward, and its name is inspired by the city's traditional street peddlers. The founders wanted a gin that was distinctly Chinese without being gimmicky.
Eleven botanicals
Peddlers combines juniper, sourced from Hungary and Italy, with Chinese botanicals that had never been used together in gin: Sichuan pepper, Buddha's hand citron, lotus flower and Xinjiang almonds, alongside coriander seed, angelica, liquorice root, Chinese cassia and East Asian mint. Its Sichuan peppercorns come from the village of Qingxi, in Hanyuan, Sichuan, chosen for their fragrance. The gin is distilled in small batches in a copper pot still.
Design
The apothecary-shaped bottle is inspired by Shanghai's peddlers of the past. Its jade green colour, a symbol of purity in China, recalls the address plates in the city's alleyways.
