"Crazy Fang"
Wang Fang's father worked in agriculture all his life before turning to vines in his fifties. After visiting an international wine fair with him, Wang decided to start her own winery, with no professional experience at all. The idea seemed so bold that the wine world nicknamed her "Crazy Fang". In 2011, she opened Kanaan Winery in Ningxia.
A modern mind
Kanaan quickly became one of Ningxia's most respected estates, known for refined reds and for its willingness to break conventions, such as bottling white wines under screw cap in a market that was said to reject it. Its wines have been listed by retailers abroad, including in Australia.
Why it matters
Wang Fang is one of the women who lead Ningxia's wine revolution, alongside Emma Gao and Zhang Jing. Kanaan is proof that passion can build a great estate in a single generation.
