Fenjiu is the reference for light aroma baijiu, the cleanest and most delicate of the great baijiu styles. It is made in Xinghuacun, 'Apricot Blossom Village', in Fenyang, Shanxi.
The village is famous across China thanks to the Tang poem 'Qingming', traditionally attributed to Du Mu, which every schoolchild learns: in the spring rain, a traveller asks where to find a tavern, and a shepherd boy points far away, to Apricot Blossom Village. Tradition links the poem to the village's taverns and its spirit.
Unlike the strong aroma producers of Sichuan, Fenjiu ferments its grain in clay jars buried in the ground, which keeps the spirit clean and pure.
A national classic
Fenjiu was one of China's 'Four Famous Spirits' recognised at the first national appraisal in 1952. Today the brand, also known as Xinghuacun Fen Wine, is one of the most valuable spirits brands in the world: Brand Finance ranked it fourth in 2025, behind Moutai, Wuliangye and Luzhou Laojiao.
