Wuliangye is one of the great names of strong aroma baijiu and, with Luzhou Laojiao, one of the two pillars of Sichuan's baijiu tradition. It is made in Yibin, where the Min River joins the Yangtze, and its water comes from the Min River.
Its name, 五粮液, means 'five-grain liquid'. Unlike many strong aroma baijiu made only from sorghum, Wuliangye is distilled from five grains: sorghum, rice, glutinous rice, wheat and corn. Its recipe is traditionally dated to the Ming dynasty.
Among the world's most valuable spirits
Wuliangye is consistently ranked by Brand Finance as the second most valuable spirits brand in the world, after Moutai, and in 2024 it was named the world's strongest spirits brand.
